TLDR DIGEST 6/19-26

“Jane never went back to the clinic, nor did she start testosterone injections. Despite what we were told, her gender dysphoria did resolve itself gradually without medical interventions. As I suspected, it turns out that other conditions had in fact contributed to Jane’s distress, including autism spectrum disorder and polycystic ovary syndrome. Once these were identified and adequately treated, Jane’s overall condition improved.  Today, as an adult, Jane supports gender-affirming interventions for adults, but not for adolescents—and admits that she was actually surprised and disappointed that the clinicians did not ask her more questions and assess her for other conditions when she was experiencing gender dysphoria.”

“The Israeli–Palestinian conflict may eventually break down itself into two: the Gaza conflict and the West Bank conflict. Although both the Hamas regime in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority running the West Bank seek to eliminate the Jewish state, they cannot agree on much else. Their unity efforts keep blowing up.”

“If higher education leaders refuse to break their silence, state and Federal legislators should withhold funds from schools that permit faculty and departments to engage in such behavior. The public, too, must demand that colleges and universities establish safeguards against the politicization of educational spaces and never allow their tax, tuition, or donor dollars to be used for hateful political propaganda and activism that dangerously undermine the public good.”

“When Chappelle deferred adding his name to the theater of the school to which he’d given so much of himself—not only checks, but return appearances—he was not yielding or apologizing. He was challenging the in-school critics: You don’t understand what I do—not my right to do it, but the reason it matters that I exercise that right. Until you do understand, you cannot have my name. Someday you will understand. You may have it then.  So what we heard in the new Duke Ellington School Theater for Artistic Freedom and Expression was neither a retreat nor an apology. It was a gesture of defiance, looking ahead to the time when the gesture will be redeemed. Chappelle to critics: The joke’s on you.”

“If you assumed that this nonprofit college is decidedly and formally religious—due to its reputation in New York and globally as a place of serious Talmudic scholarship, of Orthodox Jewish religious contemplation and study, and home to RIETS (which graduates more Orthodox rabbis than any other American seminary)—and as a religious institution is therefore protected from having to recognize organizations and practices at odds with its religious doctrines, then you would find yourself in disagreement with the jurist who is presiding over this critical religious-liberty case.”

“What kind of response is Bazelon getting for her eight months’ of hard work? Herzog highlighted how “sympathetic to trans people” the NYT feature was — but said, “I don’t think that will really matter when it comes to her critics. She’s getting dogpiled for publishing this.”  Singal agreed: “I bet if you go to the article’s comments you’ll find them to be quite positive, because normal people understand what a tough issue this is and welcome quality journalism on it. And I bet if you go on Twitter you’ll find a bunch of screaming crazy people accusing Bazelon of murder.””

Biden has few options at his disposal to lower inflation or bring down energy prices. His decision to endorse the gas tax holiday comes amid growing calls by some Democrats in Congress for the president to do more to show that he's trying to address voters' economic concerns ahead of the midterm elections this fall…Republicans shot down the plan Wednesday, arguing that a gas tax holiday was an inadequate response, while blaming Biden for stymying domestic energy production. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement the gas tax proposal was "another ineffective stunt to mask the effects of Democrats' war on affordable American energy.””

By insisting there are no losers in this circumstance, the American cultural left is setting themselves up for a rude awakening, and in so doing, undermining any claim they have to the good aspects of Title IX. A left that has in two decades gone from being a force for feminism and free speech to insisting that womanhood has no definition and pronouns are violence is not a wise bet in the arc of history long game.”

That crime is real—and getting worse—is not a fantasy. The recall of Boudin succeeded in an overwhelmingly liberal city. The problem of crime is hurting and dividing liberals, because crime is not—or at least should not be—a matter of left or right, subsumed by the superficial polarization that is roiling American life.  People see what they see, and to deny the truth or legitimacy of what they see with their own lying eyes is patronizing at best. It is also dangerous. Things aren’t worse; they just seem worse makes for an odd battle cry, and I, for one, don’t find it particularly reassuring. The disorder on display in American cities isn’t the end of the world, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the world for people to care and worry.”

“Biden’s telling [oil companies]: Do not invest in fossil fuels, even though that used to be your business. It’s over.  This is good for Russia, which is now back to peak pre-war oil production. It’s good, too, for the Saudis, the Iranians, and the Venezuelans, but it’s not good for American companies…In an Energy Department press release, it says: “The Secretary made clear that the Administration believes it is imperative that companies bring supply online to get more gas to the pump at lower prices.” Just how exactly are they supposed to do that when they can’t get permits for new drilling, or refineries, or pipelines? Burdened by extremist regulations from Ms. Granholm’s energy department as well as the interior department, the EPA, and the Securities and Exchange Commission (that thinks it’s now the Securities and Environmental Commission), how exactly are these oil companies going to boost production?”
